Okay so I actually bought this for a Captain Kirk costume and I love it and play with it all the time (probably too much lol but hey it's fun!). So the phaser is two types it's the type 1 which is a small compact handheld one (similar to the handheld ones in TNG, Voyager, DS9) and a type 2 phaser which is the "ray gun" type). So the type 1 phaser connects into the type 2 and you have both types. I actually bought this phaser not just because I wanted an accurate cosplay that too but I actually bought this because if the event i'm going to only allows costumes but no "replica guns" I can use the type 1 phaser instead. The phaser comes preloaded with a bunch of different sound effects from Stun to disintegrate and it even comes with an overload sound effect!!!! The gun is pretty sturdy and it's great for play or for cosplay and so long as you don't drop it on concrete or tile you should be fine. So now that i've stated all the things I like about it I have to (sadly) talk about the stuff I don't like. However thankfully these are very and I mean very minor issues to the product and they don't even warrant me deducting a star! So the first minor issue is where the phaser itself and the design. You see when you connect the type 1 to the type 2 there is this little "connector" that holds it in place. Well if you push the trigger down too hard it will pop the type 1 phaser out of the type 2 and you'll have to push it back in. The fix to this is not use so much pressure to push down the trigger when you fire the phaser. The trigger doesn't require a lot of force in fact less than a pinky amount of pressure will cause the phaser to fire so it's not really a big deal. Just don't push the trigger down so hard and you'll be fine. The second issue is with the "overload" setting, basically this has the exact same problem as issue one. Whenever you go into overload it will pop the type 1 phaser out of the type 2 forcing you to push it back into place. The reason is the little "connector" is just a tiny piece of plastic that snaps the type 1 into place. This little piece of plastic isn't really strong enough to hold the type 1 in place when you use the overload setting so it constantly pops the phaser out. This is a bit annoying but in truth I keep my phaser either on stun or on kill so I never really use the overload setting at all. It's really a beautiful phaser and more than a cosplay piece to me. The last and final con is the settings. So on occasion when you switch from Stun to Kill you won't hear the setting and so you have to set it again. It could just be weak batteries but it is a bit annoying when I switch from Stun to Kill and then don't hear anything. It does this occasionally but not often enough to warrant a deduction of a star. I love the thing and will continue to play with it even though i'm a grown man lol. Just don't push the trigger down so hard and when you use overload put your thumb on the type 1 so that it doesn't "pop out".This is the third item that I did purchase from the Diamond Select line of old Star Trek replicas. My first Phaser was a medical (white handle) one, and that was garbage; not sure if it was defective or it if came like that from the factory, as bad design, but it was hard to even put together, and many features were not working as expected. This one seems much better; rotating the ring around the nozzle, change the brightness of the laser effect on the transparent part of the phaser; the wheel on the back of the unit enable the overloading, and the plug to connect the Type1 phaser to the Type2 is working as expected. In case you do not know, the phaser here is the type 2; which is more powerful. The small black unit on the top, is the type 1, which is less powerful. you can detach it from the type 2 and use it on its own, or mount it on the type 2 phaser for a stronger weapon. The phaser has 5 settings, which you can select using the wheel on the top; the other wheel raise a bit the screen, to simulate some sort of aiming system, but just let it be; because it lift not even an inch the center part of the phaser, and really there is not much difference, but it feel like it may break easily. When on its own, the type 1 has a button on the bottom, that is very small and is not easy to notice, this is what you use to fire; and a red beam with the appropriate sound will play. When on the type 2, the phaser has a trigger on the bottom, which is very clear to see, being silver and being where you would expect to find a trigger; the red beam is channeled through the transparent rod in the nozzle, and that will turn red when you will fire it. Other than that, type 2 is just a handle where to put type 1 phaser, and has no other use.The wheel in the back is used for the overload feature, but all that it does is to press a inner switch, so when you use the trigger, instead of the usual sound, you will hear the overload sound. In the end, it is decently made; I would prefer something more premium, but of better quality; since this is basically all plastic. But can't really deny that it is a great replica of the show propOK the geek in me is going rather nuts over this one.My 8 year old daughter has become obsessed with all things Star Trek and she and the wife had decided that this Halloween we will all go as Star Trek themed. So of course I go and start getting us some props nine months in advance :^>First off, yes it is plastic but I have felt a lot cheaper plastic than what is on this phaser. No scratches or dents, no paint problems, the overall finish looks very nice. I am very pleased with its look, my daughter went nuts seeing it, frankly it looks like a prop even though it's really just a toy.All sounds work and the batteries were not drained. Light works fine too. Spent some time freaking out the cats with this phaser, I am not sure they like it as much as we do ! The main knob on the phaser only has two sounds, the main fire (which is set on the knob of the type 1 phaser) and an overload sound. My cats really hated the overload sound. If you have cats and want to annoy them, this sound does the trick. The type 1 phaser disconnects easily and also works fine. All the sounds are set from the knob on the right. Once you remove the tab that is used for demo mode, keep in mind the first position is 'no sound', your batteries are not dead, just go to another setting. The knob on the left will pop up the little targeting viewport that I think was used in one episode. Mine worked perfectly fine and stayed in position.Weight wise, it could have been heavier but I honestly expected it to be lighter and cheaper; I think this is a testament to using a decent plastic instead of some of the really cheap plastics I have seen in the past.Overall imam glad we picked this up and can't wait for the communicator and NG phaser to come in. I have always loved the original series and have to admit, this is pretty cool. Any fan would appreciate this.I have always wanted one of these and finally decided to buy one. First of all the build, yes, it's plastic but it's fairly robust. The only gripe is that the phaser 1, (the little black unit that clips onto the main unit), is a little loose. There are two sound effects, stun and kill, both are accurate the sound from the show. The price was very expensive for what it is, however - as these, (black handled phasers) are getting as rare unicorn's horns, I bit the bullet and shelled out. It will now have pride of place on display on the shelf.Bought it for a present for someone for Christmas, and saw it for the first time today. Very cheap and chatty looking. Packaged like a Poundland toy, poor quality and amateurish. Phaser itself was badly made and had a scratch on it, revealing a poor quality paint job. Electronics were really bad too. Complete rip off.Unbelievably cool. Does everything it says. Sounds are a little quiet, but totally authentic. Its just a shame I can't use the stun setting to stop my wife giving me an earfull about yet more sci-fi stuff lol.A little expensive but I just dont care. :)A great cosplay item. Packaged and delivered well. Plastic joint between type 1 and type 2 phaser is a little jiggly, but holding. Disappointed in how quiet the sounds are and that the lights are a little dim, but working on improving them. For anybody who is a fan of the original star treck this is probably a mustAlong with the phaser one being detachable and other settings availableThere will be others who would like this
