From the Manufacturer The Hawker Hurricane is a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was designed and predominantly built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd for the Royal Air Force. The Hurricane was ordered into production in June 1936, mainly due to its relatively simple construction and ease of manufacture. As war was looking increasingly likely, time was of the essence in providing the RAF with an effective fighter aircraft. The first four aircraft to enter service with the RAF joined No. 111 Squadron. By the outbreak of the World War II, nearly 500 Hurricanes had been produced, and had equipped 18 squadrons. During the war, it was quickly learned that destroying German tanks was incredibly difficult. Therefore, the Mk. IIs were used in the ground support role. Each Mk. II was equipped with a 40mm cannon in a pod under each wing. The Mk. II was also equipped with the Merlin XX, which featured a new two-speed supercharger, which could have it's impeller speed changed by the pilot depending upon the outside air pressure. The result was more power at both lower and higher altitudes, which increased overall performance of the engine.
